Was Trip to Cancun Catalyst to Murder? Jodi Arias Murder Trial

Marie "Mimi" Hall was the first prosecution witness to take the stand in the Jodi Arias Murder trial. She took the stand on January 3, 2013. Hall told jurors that she met Travis Alexander through the Mormon Church. Although they initially went on a date, it was quickly recognized that they were a great match as friends, and they remained such good friends that Alexander invited Hall to accompany him on a work retreat to Cancun, Mexico. The trip was to begin on June 10, 2008. Travis wouldn't live to see that day. Friends found him murdered in his home in Mesa, AZ on June 9, 2008. Coincidence, or catalyst? Travis's close friends have told investigators that Arias had been engaging in stalker-like behavior in the months preceding the murder. Twice, Alexander had his tires slashed after going out with other women. He told close friends his Facebook account had been hacked into. Arias even reportedly would use the doggie door to gain entry to Alexander's home. A woman Travis had been dating received mysterious e-mails, warning her that it was sinful to have a man sleeping under the same roof. The e-mails were anonomyus, but it doesn't take a forensic genius to figure out who was behind the threats. The evidence presented thus far has been nothing less than shocking. Graphic language and photos have been marked as exhibits, as Travis's horrified family and friends struggled to keep their composure. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for them to view the bloody photographs of their brother, his home - his life cut short by this woman who is now trying to ruin his reputation. Prosecutor Juan Martinez has methodically taken the jury through evidence that undeniably links Arias to this crime. Some of the strongest evidence so far has been the photos recovered from the digital camera. It appears Arias attempted to delete the photos the pair had taken earlier that day, when she drove from her home in Yreka, CA to his Mesa AZ home in the middle of the night. The photos were sexually explicit. The most damaging photos were taken in what appears to be the beginning of the violent attack. Thankfully the photos were recovered, and the date/time stamps removed any doubt that Arias was lying about not being there. When confronted with her lies, she simply adjusted her story. To the best of my knowledge, the trial hasn't been televised live. On Monday, January 7, "In Session" will begin coverage of what has been called "the biggest case since Casey Anthony". It's easy to draw comparisons between these two young women. They are both attractive young ladies who have lied over and over. At least Casey Anthony was smart enough to avoid giving taped interviews with the media while she was awaiting trial! Thanks to the "Sunshine State" laws, we were able to see Casey's interactions and conversations with her family - this provided some insight into who she was. I'm sure she could've had interviews lined up by the dozens. Arias seemingly couldn't help herself - she lied on two taped interviews and told two completely different stories during each. The boldest statement to come out of Jodi Arias's mouth was "no jury will ever convict me of this crime, and you can mark my words!". As I've said time and time again - this woman GREATLY overestimates her own intelligence and charms. She ultimately is UNDERESTIMATING the intelligence of the jury as well. When confronted with the cold and hard evidence against her, the only option she had left to her was to cry "self defense" or "insanity". There are legal definitions around both of those defenses. There's a huge difference between defending yourself, to the point where you are able to escape the imminent danger you are facing and an outright slaughter. This was an outright slaughter. Rageful overkill. Jodi Arias's attorney is trying to paint a picture of a demure woman who was seduced and used by a sexual deviant and emotionally abuse man. Text messages and e-mails do show that at some point, Travis Alexander called Jodi Arias a "slut" and "whore". Since Travis is no longer here to frame the context of these messages, we may never know what preceded or followed them. What we do have are close friends of Travis who have said he had a heart of gold, he was funny - he encouraged the people around him to live the best lives they could live, and most importantly - he was a gentle and kind person who nobody ever saw or heard abusing anybody. He treated people the way he wanted to be treated. He may have entered into an intimate relationship outside of marriage and against his Mormon faith, but that doesn't define him as a person or a man. He is defined by all of the lives he touched. Yesterday in court jurors also heard the first taped interview between lead detective Esteban Flores and defendant Jodi Arias, in which the first of many lies was told. Arias denied being in Arizona, stating that she hadn't seen Travis in several months. As the discussion continued, when asked if she knew of anybody who would want to harm Travis Alexander, and if he had been having any problems or issues with anyone, Arias was quick to point out that his tires had been twice slashed. Ironic, since she is the person suspected of the tire slashing incidents. She also attempted to point investigators towards a roommate of Travis's. Her behavior before the murder frightened his friends. Her behavior after the murder stunned and sickened family and friends. She attended his funeral service, reportedly smiling at family and friends during such a somber moment. She added a "In Memorial" photo montage of Travis Alexander to her MySpace page days after the body was found. It was still viewable on the internet as late as last week. There is a quote from Travis on her MySpace blog page. Sad. They only dated for a few months, yet he paid the ultimate price for this relationship. She couldn't let go. She wouldn't let him go on with his life without her.

  1. She's guilty. The murder was planned out ahead of time because of jealousy. She was not only jealous of Travis going to Cancun with another woman, but also jealous of Travis himself. He was everything she ever wanted to be. Everything she knew she would never be. He was loved by everyone, smart, successful. She wanted to own him because she loved how she felt when she was with him. She knew she was a loser , she was nothing without him. And if she couldn't have him, nobody would .it hurt her that he only used her for sex, but wanted to date classier people. She decided he WOULD NOT be going to Cancun, and then she made sure he didn't. She made him get in the shower at gunpoint . She made him pose. That's why the closeup of his face , he looks upset. Mad and his eyes even look like he may have been crying earlier. She told him she was going to kill him. He probably didn't believe it til it was too late.....Jennifer Martin

    1. Wow that's an interesting take that she was jealous of him. I agree - she saw that he was successful, had tons of friends, a beautiful home and had plans for travel in the months that followed. None of those plans included her. And she ended up back in small town Yreka, living in a room at her grandparents house. She wanted his life but it seems he didn't want hers. The timing of the killing, so close to the Cancun trip couldn't be coincidental! Never thought of her forcing him into the shower, but I completely agree he doesn't appear happy in any of those photos. Thanks so much for your thoughts!

    2. Yea, Jennifer. I heard the same theory from one of her aquaintances on TV. I guess that's where you heard it too. I'm not buyin it. She's holding the gun with one hand and snapping photos with the other. And they are close up photos. I don't think so, Jen.

    3. Excellent and accurate analysis of this killing profile. I do agree with the thoughts and connection. It was blind, obsessed jealousy and rage, or with me or with nobody. She snapped, mentally unstable!

    4. she didn't get him in the shower at gunpoint, he was enjoying that shower. she was taking pictures. it is probably true that she dropped his camera and he may have insulted her, and then she was triggered. Crying in the shower? with all that water dripping, of course, a billions tears, all over his hair and body. he seemed angry when he stared ahead, as if she was 'secretely taking pictures' and then he discovered it. I seriously wish I knew at what point she pulled out that gun, when did that time become right? it obviously failed because he must have turned, and then they had to fight, so he wasn't looking when .she started to shoot but then caught her. i don't know how you get from sex, to taking pictures, to shooting... he must have insulted her over dropping the camera, there is a picture of the ceiling, the camera must have been dropped, and knowing he was going to need it for Cancun, plus guys love their gadgets, he had to have insulted her. Did she always walk with a gun? who knows.

    1. I personally believe that Jodi had Travis posing in the shower and stabbed him first. Notice she had him with his back facing the wall with arms up - and then seated under pretense of getting "Calvin Klein" look for photos. I think he was corned in that shower and she stabbed him first. He must have been stunned, stumbled out of shower to the sink where she slit his throat. He fell, she stabbed him several times in the back and then shot him. That's what I think the most likely scenario is considering the way the blood was pooled under the bullet casing it's unlikley she shot him first. It's very interesting to hear other people's theories of this crime! I think he got in the shower voluntarily, and was lulled into a false sense of security and then ambushed! Thanks for your comment.

  3. I believe she did make him afraid by the look of the close up of him looking afraid... I also wonder if she had stabbed him in the chest by that pose of him in the shower holding his chest.. and then he went after her down the hall and into the bedroom she slit his throat which was uncalled for. Why she drug him back to the shower so she could stop all the blood..This woman deserves to be done just like she did him.. IM so sorry for the family of Travis.. I believe he was a good guy, just hooked up with the wrong jealous crazy woman

  4. Really great theories! May I add something? I believe she went there hoping to sex him into getting back with her, and possibly taking her to Cancun as well, but planning to kill him if he refused. He obviously refused. I agree. His face in the shower looks like he is seeing something that scares him, and she is trying to get a reaction shot.

    1. Michelle, thanks for commenting. I don't think anybody believes that Travis told Jodi he was taking "a friend's babysitter" on this trip as a way of repaying a debt he owed to the friend. I wish they had asked her "who is this friend"? Let's get that person in the courtroom - maybe Martinez is saving his best for rebuttal case? Jodi knew he was taking Mimi, and when her booty call with him didn't change his mind she couldn't bear the thought of the two of them in Cancun - she wasn't going to let him go without her. If she didn't plan this, why did she go to such great lengths to avoid having any receipts while in Arizona? Why bring gas cans? Who travels with 10 gallons of combustible gas in the trunk of a rental car? People rarely do that because there are gas stations! It's so transparent - and she seems to be adding new details to her story as the jury questions are asked. Like the gun holster she claims Travis had for the .25 caliber gun. I only wish they had found that gun - that would've sealed her fate for premeditation, but hopefully the jury will come to the same logical conclusions that we have. It's a very tragic story, one that has touched so many people who didn't know Travis Alexander but have been effected by his story. Thanks again for commenting!

  5. I wish someone would find the manicurist - the one Jodi used for her mani/pedi on the way to see Travis. She could testify about whether or not Jodi's broken finger was actually in that condition or not - and likely totally debunking the "abuse" accusations.

RIP, Travis. And may peace come to your family soon.

    1. Dear Anonymous,
Oh yes, I completely agree and believe she recorded that "sex tape" with blackmail in mind. She was growing increasingly desperate after she moved back to Yreka, and probably felt like she was losing control of Travis. She sent those anonymous e-mail messages to the women Travis went out with, so her playing that audio recording for a person he may have been interested in is not a far stretch! She is pure evil, truly a wolf in sheeps clothing.

  7. It is obvious that this was a premeditated murder. I agree with every statement that has been posted plus some. It's sad that this young up and coming man lost his life. What the jurors need to remember is that he meant something to his friends and family. That he was loved and that he suffered so. All the in between no longer matters but his legacy. His life was cut short and no matter what no one can bring him back. His friends and family are his voice now. Travis we hear you. Your reputation will not be ruined. Actions speak louder than words and Jodie is laying in the bed she made for herself. RIP & not to worry. You have touched the hearts of many.

Very nicely said! I think we all feel so badly for the Alexander family. First they lost their brother, grandson and friend - and now they have had to endure hearing these embarrassing audio tapes and have had his character ripped apart like some womanizing brute that treated Arias poorly. Its got to be agonizing. I hope they know how many supporters they have out here, and that Travis DID touch the lives of people who didn't even know him. Thanks for writing!

  12. The defense team is trying to use that "sex tape" as an excuse for him being a deviant and abuser. It's called sex play or role play. I've been married 12 years and my husband and I send texts and talk dirty sometimes. Travis just fell into her trap and he couldn't get out even though he tried. If some woman is throwing sex at you I believe it would be hard to say no. Just sad that he had to die.

  13. I don't doubt this Cancun trip with Mimi Hall helped push her over the edge. However, I also believe Travis was getting ready to expose her, for what I am unsure, although he said she "scammed him" and hurt him very badly in his text messages to her. I believe she planned this murder in advance-based on whatever he found out and was ready to expose her. She stole his journals which may have contained what she was afraid of getting out. She had his passwords, even his ATM information so she could have been extorting money from him as well.

Mimi Hall said when she walked in the house the day that Travis's body was found that there was a foul smell in the whole house..Tell me how a roommate could have lived in the house for five days and not noticed the smell and got curious about where Travis was? After all his car was still in the garage, his keys and etc.in his office...

  15. I have had very similar thoughts. One thing that I think may be a partial truth in Jodi Arias story....lol Ok, she threatened Travis with showing everyone who he was when he was with her. She was going to blackmail him with the pictures. He may have lunged at her to get the camera to prevent her from going forth with the pictures. He was not mad about her dropping the camera, he wanted the memory card to delete the photos. He had his whole life before him and he would not have threatened her, unless she was threatening him. I believe he may have been trying to retrieve his camera and that is when she shot him. The photos in the shower look staged by her to humiliate him. She destroyed his BMW and he did not get upset about that. WOW!! The camera meant more to him than his BMW.....think about that.

  17. wow. just because he's dead doesn't mean he was an angel. he was rude, he was mean, he loved sex, he betrayed someone that loved him and gave him her time. she felt used, she went crazy over the thought of another woman, and BECAME a stalker. i can't tell you how many normal people i know, who becamee stalkers because of LOVE, or infatuation. Love makes you crazy. I can't stand it when men use women for sex, and then call them a whore or slut. she's expecting love, but gets disrespect. Sex was the only thing he responded to, it was the only way she could keep him, not like she was an actual sex addict, she was pretending, for hin. women sell out , ALL the time, especially with the blow jobs. The way to know if a man loves you, or respects you... he actually does wait. but she can't know that, she has no idea what its like for someone to actually love you. the same way a man BUYS his way into a woman's heart, and gets used, the same way a woman offers blow jobs, like Monica Lewinksi. no one calls a man any names when he sleeps around. Travis definitely had a fetish, and met the wrong person, someone who couldn't live it down, but expected a life together. love makes everyone a stalker. the person becomes obssessed with everything that you could be doing with someone else, it is more like spying than stalking, they really want to catch you, it shocks them when they actually see the person put his hands around someone the same way he did with you, or say the same thihgs. For those who don't know, Betrayal is the worst form of trauma. No other trauma is worst, it alters your previous beliefs, the world basically becomes FAKE. Travis was no angel, and if he was callous abut the whole thing, instead of highly sensitive, then he really played his cards wrong, because he met the personality who could not deal with it. I never see this type of accusations directed towards possessive men who kill, we just know 'men are like that'. We don't call them evil. No one deserves to die because of unrequitted love, but Travis was not sensitive to her feelings. it was as though she had no feelings. And now we are accusing her of being cold and having no feelings, when ALL she ever had, were feelings. A rational person would not do this, only an emotional person, a person of overwhelming sensitity, emotion, and inability to control emotions. people who are abused in childhood fall hard for abusers, she didn't obsess over her past boyfriends who cheated on her like this one, so he must have been abusive, he felt like home, and she was ALL in.

I don't get the sense that anybody here is saying Travis Alexander was an angel. I simply don't believe he's the batterer and abuser they are making him out to be. That "sex tape" spoke volumes to me, because of the extent that it was equal participation - he didn't have to draw anything out of Arias. She wrote some fairly nasty/provocative (and unsolicited) things to him, yet the defense would have us believe Arias only became this way after meeting Travis? I just don't buy 99% of what she's said. It also seems Arias is the only person who has seen this violent and controlling side to Travis which also makes me doubt her uncorroborated stories.

    3. For the record, psycho, it was TRAVIS who was abused in childhood- NOT Jodi. Don't make his story, her story. She's a psychopath who deserves a long and painful death.

  18. None of the above described emotional "traumas" is an excuse for murder, lies, stalking behavior, character assassination, etc. in an otherwise normal individual. I do not believe Jodi will/would ever change - even with tons of counseling. This is how she is put together and it has served her well, being so incredibly manipulative and using men to get what she craves - insatiable attention! She truly feels superior in intelligence, etc. Look at how inappropriately she smiles, etc.

  20. We are all looking at Jodi....is it possible that someone i responsible for Travis murder. As small as she is, she was able to drag him back in the shower after he was dead? Also have anyone consider the fact that Travis sexual sins was found out by the Mormons?..... could it be that she is the scapegoat? And another thing, no, it does not justify his death, but he was not the goodie good that he is being betrayed. If in fact she did it, there is some underlining fact that there was some abuse physical and more so emotional abuse. For a woman to kill like that, there is something we are missing here. She is being bashed by so many and we don't really know, so we are judging, and to hear the joy of people wanting her dead. It will not bring him back. But if we are going to condemn her, we also need to admit there was some things that he did as leading on. If he broke up with her, why have her over to have sex with her again. This should teach us all a lesson, we shouldn't play with a person's heart, don't lead people on and don't forget he used religion to get what he wanted. Again, nothing justify anyone to be murdered. My regards to both family, there is lose on both sides. We shouldn't forget that! God still want us to show compassion....even to her! You don't know until you have been there. I thank God that it is only His grace that have kept me from hurting back......we just don't know the whole story, the whole TRUTH!,,

  21. It takes a lot of rage for someone to kill in the manner that Travis Alexander was killed. Initially I believed that some of the rage was triggered by her belief that Travis was going on a romantic vacation with Mimi, but after seeing her testimony (and what she looks like) I don't think that she was the threat. Travis being with other women certainly was part of the build up of rage, and his own friends testimony as to his treatment of her makes me believe that it is possible that he may have physically abused her whether or not people witnessed it firsthand, he certainly verbally, emotionally, and psychologically did. Does this mean that he deserved what happened to him? Absolutely NOT. But it does make sense that that final verbal abusive due to her dropping his camera would and may have set her over the edge - it was one time too many. And if he did go at her she moved faster and completely LOST it! In addition - if someone is planning a murder they don't go and pose in pictures and then throw it in the washer to damage pictures - they don't take pictures period or they get rid of the camera outside and far away from the crime scene - like a garbage dump or better yet burn it/destroy it in a desert for the vultures to circle. And they certainly don't leave their DNA all over the place or make purchases on credit cards. I do not believe this was planned - it was a crime of passion. We will never know the full truth of what happened that night. Only Jodi and Travis do - and Travis can't tell us.

  22. One more thing - when women are stalked they certainly don't invite their stalker into their home to have sex. Reading the letter she wrote to him regarding his lack of recognition for her assistance and him recognizing "Kate" indicates this. From everything I have seen - this was a toxic relationship in which he was the dominant partner as he had some form of control over her. Except for the outcome. That connection should have been severed a long time before - with no contact. There should have been a clean break and any attempts she made to contact him he should not have replied nor made any contact with her. It is pretty clear that she was unstable even prior to the murder. I can state that abusive of another person whether or not it is physical can lead to unstable behavior. The fact that his family and close friends were shocked by the communication is very telling - they obviously were unaware of that side of his personality and that people can never assume what goes on in a relationship between two people in a romantic connection whether or not it is based on lust. It takes two people to continue a connection. That is all.

The difference is most people don't grab a knife and a gun and turn a suite of rooms into a slaughterhouse over it because they were "hurt" emotionally.

Thank you for your comments. The guilt phase of the trial is over, but I still come back and revisit my early blog entries and am surprised to see new comments. I couldn't agree with your thoughts more. We have all been hurt and experienced rejection at some point in our lives. It can be devastating and it can feel like the pain will never end - but somehow, it does! Thankfully, most people realize that time heals and are able to move on without feeling the need to exact this type of horrific revenge/punishment on the person who rejected them. Although I'll never agree that it's OK to harm somebody in this manner, it's happened frequently since the beginning of time and therefore we know people can simply "snap". What I hate most about this case is the manner in which Arias attempted to completely destroy Travis' character and accuse him of the physical/sexual abuse against her, without one piece of evidence to corroborate her very tall tales. She and her defense team verbally murdered him all over again in that courtroom, in an attempt to minimize her responsibility in this violent, brutal and merciless slaughter. It's unforgivable. These type of torture killings are the reason the death penalty still exists, even if studies seem to show it isn't a deterrent. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

    3. Hello, My Forte!

Thank you for your comments on my post, AND for all the work you have put into this over the many months it dominated our lives! This was always the first place I checked for information on days when I was short on time for watching the trial on Youtube after work! Your opinions are well thought out, mature, fair, and informed. The re-killing of Travis at the trial was an absolute travesty/abomination, and IMO, should have been kept out by the judge as pure hearsay. Like you said, there was not one shred of evidence whatsoever. There was just an "Attention Whore" by the name of Jodi looking for even more sensationalism and attention than she had already commanded. JA got a MORE than fair trial - she practically ran it herself! I don't think I could stand it to see an appeal based on an unfair trial, depending on how this all turns out. I was totally fascinated because I have never seen such a cunning woman work an audience the way JA did - she was a master manipulator and conned nearly everyone she came into contact with during the case. Interestingly, most of Travis's friends saw right through her! I want to see justice for Travis and peace and justice for his tortured family! Have you noticed she is tweeting yet again - just posted one today! She has an insatiable appetite for the limelight.

    4. Hi Judy,
I'm embarrassed to admit I don't recall your blog where I commented? I've visited many over the years, although I've only left comments on maybe 2 or 3, so yours must have been noteworthy - to borrow a term from JA!! OMG, Arias has turned into a fame-hungry, attention grabbing, let's-see-how-I-can-shock-people-today monster! I think she is upset that other trials are now being discussed and she is not the topic of every HLN show. I'd be willing to bet that really eats her! That's why she continues with the ridiculous tweets, to try and remain relevant - like she's a part of pop culture, like a Kim Kardashian wanna be. It's been an absolute trip to watch this woman soaking it all up, and with blood all over her hands. I'm not sure why I have such strong personal feelings about the idea of her finding ways to make money off of this crime. It bothers me more than it should! I imagine the money she's already funneled out, the victims family's money. Like OJ, I'm betting Arias will do her best to see the Alexander family gets nothing from her. She still is playing the part of the persecuted victim!! I've never seen anybody behave the way she does. It's like a bad car wreck that you can't turn away from!! Are you going to follow the Andrea Sneiderman trial? There's another piece of work - she came across so poorly at Hemy Neuman's trial. The "how-dare-you" accuse me of something attitude, her combative answers on the stand and the creepy hug/threat to her friend after she got off the stand - I think her attitude is what got her arrested!! I'm going to follow that trial, Sneiderman is an unlikeable defendant.

    5. Hello again. I think I may have used poor wording and confused you a little when I commented before. I've never had a blog of my own. I was referring to commenting on YOUR blog previously, and you kindly responding.

I think you have nailed it with the Kardashian comparison - but Kim Kardshians on steroids! I had a good laugh when I read that - and there has been very little to laugh at in this case.

I am shocked Sheriff Joe has not stopped her tweeting - he said he was going to put an end to it! And from her tweets, it's obvious life is not so bad in his jail, what with her newfound love of country western music, new pictures to sell, etc. I wish I had the free time to nurture my soul the way she seems to! Honestly - she is putting a thumb in the eye of decent people everywhere - and sadistically seems to be enjoying every minute of it. And who is SHE to be putting out her preachy, moralistic tweets - like someone might want to learn from HER? Of course she has picked a forum where one cannot respond - much like the ambush she pulled off on poor Travis.

And yes, the money thing is something that just gets my craw! Why in the world hasn't the sheriff put an end to that too, now that she has been convicted? The first time I saw her "Survivor" T-shirts, I nearly opened a vein!!!

You would think she has just been nominated for Miss America instead of being in the boat she's in. I, too, am entirely way too invested and far too fascinated with her and should stop the obsession. But you're right - it's like watching a wreck and I can't seem to turn my face away from hers. I was Googling away one night and actually came across a time-lapse photo of what she would look like after being in prison for 20-30 years. I wish I would have bookmarked the page - I would have sent you the link.

You know, I remind myself of the women I used to make fun of for being so caught up in their soap operas. I just seem to have found my own in Jodi Arias. She is a soap opera craving an audience every minute of her existence. How in the world did she manage to land a decent guy like Travis in the first place? Did you watch the movie "Dirty Little Secret" when it came out? I was disappointed, myself. I always like true crime stories that more closely follow the story. That being said, it wasn't horrible and it fed my "withdrawal" for a few hours! LOL!

No, I am not familiar with the case you are referring to and truly have to wean myself off so much TV and computer time for awhile or my rear-end will need a wide-load sign from so much sitting. But I have been rather loosely following the Zimmerman trial and boy - was I glad to see him found Not guilty, though I do fear for his life.

Well this is way too long, but thanks again for corresponding and I will check back every few days for anything new you may have dug up. Like I said, you seem to have good, reliable information and be very well-informed!

  26. Travis TOLD JODI that he DID NOT WANT TO BE WITH HER. Jodi told her they could keep having sex, NO STRINGS ATTACHED. She didn't really mean that, but was Travis supposed to be a mind-reader? She clearly KNEW he did not want to be with her, but kept coming back- even MOVED TO MESA after he dumped her! Why people are defending her and dogging on Travis, I have no clue. He made it very clear he did not want to marry her. Jodi would not go away and kept tempting him.. to his death. She knew she was evil, she knew she was a shitty person- Too bad she was too much of a coward to take her OWN life instead of his. She's not worth the air she breathes.
