Is Alyce LaViolette Cashing In On Murder Trial?

As the defense finishes questioning their star witness, domestic abuse expert Alyce LaViolette, many are disillusioned by her choice to take the stand to portray murder defendant Jodi Arias as a battered and abused woman.  Maybe I'm the one who's crazy, but wasn't Travis Alexander the one who had the life stabbed, slashed and shot out of him at the hands of Jodi Arias? Who battered whom here?  Are Travis Alexander's not-so-kind text messages to Jodi Arias PROOF that he was a womanizing batterer and bully who held all the power in the relationship between Arias and Alexander?

Alyce LaViolette seems to think so. Does she have any idea the feelings of outrage she is bringing out in the hearts and minds of the real victims of domestic abuse all over the country? Before LaViolette began testifying, I kept asking myself "why would a woman who is so well respected in her field choose THIS case, defend THIS woman?"  Could it be the money? I suppose $250-$300 an hour could be very tempting. If LaViolette spent 45 hours interviewing Arias at $250 an hour, that alone brought her a fat paycheck of $11,250.00.  She makes $300 an hour for court testimony, and she has spent 6 days on the stand already - let's call it 30 hours, since she was sick on Wednesday, there's another $9,000.00 - and she's still testifying.

Who knows how many hours she spent on "research", and I believe she testified that she is paid $250 an hour for that. Let's be conservative and say she spent another 100 hours "researching" this case, listening to interrogation tapes, 48 Hours and other media interviews and reading the 600+ Arias journal entries. Add on another $25,000.00. That's $45,250.00 so far. What's harder to put a price on is the national exposure LaViolette has received for her role in this trial.  That's free advertising for her private practice, that's free publicity for her book "It Could Happen To Anyone: Why Battered Women Stay" - which by the way, the 3rd edition reprint is coming out on April 23, 2013. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Alyce LaViolette is also scheduled to speak at a handful of upcoming events in April, where with other guest speakers the registration fees range from $80-$495! She is scheduled to speak on April 26, April 27, and 5/4 in Manhattan California and San Diego California. The topic of one such conference is "Is It Anger Or Abuse: Assessing For Intimate Partner Violence". Do you think she will use the Jodi Arias trial as a case study in any of her future speaking engagements?http://www.alycelaviolette.com/Speaking-Schedule.htm

Whatever her motives were for choosing to get on the witness stand and defend a woman who borrowed 2 gas cans and bought another, staged a robbery at her grandparents home and stole a handgun, rented an inconspicuous white car and flipped the license plate, told everyone she was going to Utah and told nobody she was going to Mesa - why she chose to give any credibility to THIS woman's tales, I'll never know and never understand.  This wasn't the "fight for her life" that Arias sold to her defense attorney Jennifer Willmott. This was a carefully planned out and calculated murder. She lured Travis Alexander into a false sense of security by engaging in sex with him, talked him into posing for pictures in the shower- carefully posing him to get him in a vulnerable position before HER ATTACK began. Travis Alexander likely never saw it coming. And when she was finished, Arias had the presence of mind to try and clean up the scene and remove all traces of her visit from the home. THANK GOD FOR THE MEMORY CARD! Arias had the forethought to leave voicemails and send text messages to Travis. She knew she had to remove the battery from her cellphone while she was in the state of Arizona. This was planned, down to the smallest detail. She carried on as if nothing ever happened. It's so clear to me.

Had he seen this coming, he surely would've been better able to fight her off and inflict injury on Arias in the struggle. Evidence in that bathroom and at the crime scene shows the only struggle that was going on was Travis struggling to get out of the shower and away from his attacker. She followed him, she continued to attack and attack until he was no longer able to even protect himself. He had deep stab wounds on his hands, defensive wounds - he had a cluster of stab wounds on HIS BACK, again - not indicative of Arias's self defense claims. He was shot in the head, just for good measure. Make no mistake, Arias was in a blind rage and all of her anger was released onto Travis Alexander in that bathroom on June 4, 2008. All of her anger, jealousy and personal frustrations spilled out and Travis Alexander was executed.

So how could LaViolette attempt to justify this kind of brutal killing? This wasn't a woman who endured beatings on a regular basis, she was a woman who didn't get what she wanted or thought she deserved. Travis Alexander was happy, he was getting ready to leave on a trip he was very much looking forward to with a woman he was very interested in. Arias believed Travis wanted to spend the rest of his LIFE with Mimi Hall! She told Detective Flores as much during one of their interrogation videos. So as Arias sat in the small bedroom she now called "home" in Yreka, the thoughts of Travis and Mimi most likely were haunting her. Knowing how charming Travis Alexander could be, I'm sure Arias worked herself into a frenzy imagining the two of them in romantic Cancun Mexico, a location listed in the "1000 Places To See Before You Die" book we've heard so much about. That was supposed to be HER trip.

Relying on Arias's journal entries and the text messages between the pair, along with her 45 hours spent with Arias at Sherriff Joe's place provided LaViolette with a limited view of what really went on in this dysfunctional relationship. Yet she was able to form a fairly solid opinion on Travis: he was controlling, he had all the power, he was jealous and said cruel things to her, he was a womanizer. As for Arias, she came out smelling like roses. Something is definitely rotten in Denmark. Did LaViolette interview Jodi Arias's parents? They may have given her a better insight on her "family of origin" theories. Instead, she formed an opinion on Travis Alexander's family of origin - using his own words about his difficult childhood against him as a precursor for having difficulties forming relationships as an adult. Shame on you, attacking the character of a dead man. The very least you she could have done is say "while I never had the opportunity to talk to Travis Alexander......" She seemingly ignored all of the positive things that Travis Alexander did DESPITE his "family of origin" issues. Again, shame on you!

I personally don't know what Alyce LaViolette's reasons were for taking on this case, we like to think there are still some people out there who are beyond reproach and that cannot be tempted with money or fame. But I just cannot understand her decision to stand up for a woman who brutally and viciously attacked a defenseless man. Regardless of what she thinks of the way Travis treated Jodi, does she truly feel Arias was justified as a battered woman? Come on Alyce. You made a big mistake.

that defense tried to get 11 D/V experts in AZ.
to testify in Arais murder trial and all declined,
had to get someone out of state, Alyce Laviolette.

Very telling statistic that ELEVEN experts turned this case down. Thanks for the info!

    2. I bet none of the DV experts that refused would go along with the defense tactics. Like I will lead you to what we want you to testify to. You won't have to do anything except follow my lead. You can use the notes I leave for you on the witness stand. One more thing Expert. Use the words numerous emails and text messages when we ask you to testify how you came to this conclusion.

    4. I am sick and tired of people telling me how "battered and abused women" are supposed to act! As one, I do agree with Alyce on this matter and when I read these despicable comments that most of you leave, you truly anger me with your ignorance. That being said, I don't expect any of you to truly understand, because, for those of you that can't relate to me, you'll never get it. For those of you, that have been abused an explanation isn't necessary. Most of us that have experienced abuse do "get" that our behavior isn't necessarily the same as one another. Don't make the mistake of us all in the same "box" that you seem so comfortable with to reference. As for Jodi, I think she was abused and I do believe that Travis was the perpetrator. It's easy to make her out to be a monster, but sometimes the bigger monster dies in the battle.

    6. I was also married to an abuser, but there is a big difference in the way JA reacted and what most women or men (there are men abused too) would do, especially when she did not have to live or even be close to him. She is a calculating, cold scorned, obsessed sociopath and no, we should not put all of us in the same box with her either.
It is because of women like her that the real victims of real abuse are not believe sometimes. And I don't want to offend you but if you have thoughts of killing your abusive partner, especially if you are living hundred of miles away like JA did, you should seek help, because a real victim of abuse is not looking for revenge, mostly we want to be away from the abuse or abuser.

    7. I totally agree that Laviolett is a super stupid woman. She seems to have no problem answering yes or no to the defense yet cannot do the same with the prosecutor. LIAR and manipulater is Lavioletts song. She should be reported for malpractice. She is a joke. Be sure to sign the petition against Laviolett on the web.

    9. I am a survivor, enduring a childhood that know child should have to endure. From having the receiver of the phone cracked on my elbow & daily lashing with jagged wire hangers. That was a taste of physical not to mention the emotional abuse, being told how ugly & worthless i am not to mention having a card thrown at me that said how much I loved them & being asked why I always give cards that say the same crap.I only understood a lil better after mom's passing & finding out she suffered a much worse childhood then myself &now understanding she loved me the best she new how. Of course I'd marry a man who also degraded me. Calling me by names I couldn't post. Took all my pay every week & the smack's to the back & side of my head so know bruises were seen. All that said to give you a little background. When I was young it was a time when you didn't hang you dirty laundry out. What happen behind close doors stayed there. It wasn't until many years ago when victims were ashamed to tell anyone. It's because of the awareness that has been open up to the public & the compassion that is shown that makes someone like myself not ashamed to get help. It hurts me that a person like Ms. La Violette would choose to ignore the obvious in the Arias trial. Ms. La Violette was one of the people who influenced who I became. I wish she would not of based her opinion on the word of the only one standing. If anyone took the word of my abuser you'd think I was the anti christ ! The abuser is all about blame they are the victim. If you ask them. And for Alyce to sit up there & make it ok that this young man was slaughtered sends a message that I for one want know part of.

    11. This is not about abuse - this is a stalking case. I had a guy stalking my daugther. When she wanted to leave him, he threatened to kill her and me. He showed up at my door. He called and called. He violated restraining orders. I had the police pick him up. I had to go to court. I had to sell my house, move my daugther out of town for the summer. I called and called the police,,,,but this Jodi Arias in a pair of pants would not respect my wishes, my daugther's wishes, the police, his mother, the school.....and eventually you get to the point where you beat the crap out of them to leave you alone ...hence the broken finger, or the choking probably. I felt eventually this obsessive stalking would end up in homocide - me or my daugther as no one was going to get her --- or suicide because he couldn't face the fact he did not WIN......and that is what this case is really all about....not domestic violence... so goodbye Alyce be USELESS!

I work with abused women and men and Jody is anything but - she controlled Travis with sexual seduction nd she knew his weakness and his shame which sexual addiction and she used his weaknesses. It was two people using each other but it in no way was abuse - it was two people getting what they asked for and it was very much S & M and a S & M the "bottom" has the control! Shame on her!!!! She is a disgrace to her profession - she is a victims advocate -so she already decided Jody was a victim before she even met her!!!

    15. I was a victim of domestic abuse a long time before there was a title for it. I was abused from January, 1976 - July 1988 (yes, I remember the exact dates). When I started listening to this woman my blood pressure and heart rate went out the roof. One of my first thoughts was: Does this woman know what it feels like to have a black eye? A broken nose? A busted lip requiring stitches? A concussion from having her head beaten against a concrete floor? I truly doubt it. I DO!!! I have medical records, police reports and pictures. How dare her to sit there and talk the talk and never have walked the walk. I was a victim, that is true; today 25 years later, I AM A SURVIVOR. Jodie knew then and knows now what she did. This young man has been cheated out of his life. Why? We will never know the true story because the only person who knows it is dead! My heart breaks for his family and they are in my prayers. I have no idea how this is going to end; I can only hope "the twelve village idiots" are still in Florida. Travis deserves justice!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this forum. The defense "expert" made so many huge leaps about Travis Alexander and it really wrecked any credibility she had. She assumed Travis was a sex crazed man who used not only Jodi Arias but other women LaViolette described as vulnerable, without ever speaking to a single one of those women. I agree that Arias was more likely the one who used her sexuality to get what she wanted from Travis Alexander. He sounds like a normal 30 year old man, who had an interest in sex. Perhaps even more so because of his religious upbringing, so when Arias came around and was willing to take him for a walk on the wild side, he was ready but also seemed conflicted. It went both ways. The expert put all of the blame on the murder victim, not a wise move on the defense's part because she appeared so biased that the jury may very well write much of her testimony off! Thanks for your comments!

Thank you for your comments. We welcome all viewpoints in this forum. This is no "witch hunt" as you describe. These are evidence based opinions. I believe that people who are forced to "defend" themselves do not continue to assault a person in the manner that Ms. Arias did. She surely could have gotten to safety without killing this man. I have no horse in this race. My opinions are based on the facts, evidence and all of the lies told by this defendant. I don't take my ques from Nancy Grace or anybody else. Your opinion is just as valid to you as mine is to me, so no need for you to slam those who happen to disagree with your thoughts or feelings about this case. These facts are undisputed by Arias. Even Arias's parents were not shocked their daughter played a part in this young man's murder. She accused her parents of spanking her with a wooden spoon. If not for that memory card, I doubt Arias ever would have admitted to anything and the Mesa police department would be looking for the two masked intruders. People who truly kill in self defense have no need to cover up their presence in the home/state, no need to dispose of the weapons and they call police because they are traumatized! Arias did not call the police. It's the totality of everything she did and the actual evidence that brings us to the conclusions we have come to. This is no witch hunt as Eileen seems to insinuate, but everybody is entitled to their own opinions. Thanks for commenting!

  7. Jennifer Willmot, aka "The Flying Nun," needs her face slapped for all the inappropriate levity and giggling she displays with Arias at the defense table. Her pathetic direct examination of the domestic violence “expert” MISS Alyce LaViolette is testament to how ridiculous the defense claim of battered woman syndrome is in this case. Miss LaViolette finds male abuse EVERYWHERE and neatly maps Travis’ behavior to her “Abuse Continuum” table - a guideline not recognized by any legitimate governing body of psychotherapy. This “spreadsheet of abuse” is her creation that she changes to fit whatever the facts are in any given case she manages in her “professional practice.” Willmot bored the jury to tears as she slowly droned on for days dissecting every line of this psychobabble document. LaViolette is a classic man hating lesbian who has taken advantage of the Arizona tax payer to the tune of $2,000 a day plus expenses. That will keep her in oversized polyester pants suits and Harry Potter glasses for years to come.

  13. When she first approached the stand, I asked myself, how could this woman testify on behalf of the defense? Then I heard on all the blogs and comment sections how good this woman was, and how experienced, etc. So I said, well, lets give her a chance. Perhaps she'll surprise the Defense and tell the truth. Shortly after she began to speak, I quickly realized she had NO intention for that. Instead what I heard was how wonderful she was, how educated she was, how much of an expert, a pioneer for abused women and influenced courts to recognize it as a defense. I was getting bad feelings. Then she began with the specifics. She went on and on and on. So, the benefit of doubt didn't happen. Then when Juan began his cross-examination, she completely changed her demeanor. She became aggressive, pompus, talked down to him, wouldn't answer his questions, she wanted to talk about what SHE wanted to talk about. To her surprise, Juan was NOT going to be bullied by this woman. He was not going to give his control of the court to her. I can't wait until Monday. Something else became clear to me while listening to her glowing self description, was the fact that she didn't like men very much. I think her image of men has been severely tainted over the years. She's been in a bubble where she's mainly met and dealt with bad men. I thought there were three reasons she was testifying 1. self-promotion, 2 she hated men and wanted a little vengeance, 3. she wanted the money. I can't wait to see Juan tear her apart. I wonder how she's liking Juan as a man. I'd bet she characterizes him as an abuser!!!

  16. I was embarrassed for Ms. LaViolette during her testimony during cross yesterday. As a seasoned professional who has testified before her snarky responses to the prosecutor left me with a negative impression and hurt her credibility. It looked totally ridiculous for her to be constantly looking over at the defense attorneys. Her responses to the prosecutor appeared defensive and desperate. It was disappointing to see her show such little respect to the prosecutor and ultimately to the court. Immediately out of the gate she attempted to parse each question rather than fulfill her responsibility by just simply answering the questions that are posed to her. Her dramatics and grins were completely out of place while testifying in a murder trial. Believe me, the jury was *not* amused.

    1. NancyB,
I agree, Alyce did her best to make the prosecutor himself look like a bully. Her glances to the Arias defense table were blantant and they all seemed to revel in how angry Martinez was by the time he finally got to ask her some questions! I do hope he calms down a bit and focuses on the facts and doesn't allow himself to get off track. But from everything I've read, this is classic Juan Martinez! After "Dr. Samuels" poor performance on the stand, I'm sure ALV was warned.

      Delete
    2. Nancy B. You are so correct about AV responses. As a professional I could not believe the disrespect she was showing in court. She was there to give her professional opinion and that was it, not fight for JA that is the defense's job. If watching the trial from the beginning you can see that the Prosecutor's frustration with the witnesses only happens when they can not answer the questions that are put forth to them. It makes everyone and I am including the jury believe that they are hiding something and not telling the truth. My opinion only.

      Delete
    3. Swanna & NancyB,
ALV should have been held in contempt of court, in my opinion - for the way she has continued to address the prosecutor and refused to answer yes or no questions, and where does she get off speaking directly to the Judge the way she does? This is outrageous! Highly unprofessional, and I suspect ALV's career is going to take a big hit after this trial. Not because we don't like Jodi Arias, but because of the one-sided assessment she made in this case. She didn't talk to anybody who could have verified that Travis was in fear of Arias, she didn't seek out the opinion of friends who say Arias has been a manipulative liar for many years, and she discounted Arias's own father's discussion w/Flores about Jodi being untruthful. What kind of impartial expert does that? Thanks for posting!

Like Travis told this lady that. I mean is he standing there in court next to her telling her what to say about him.
Truly it makes me sick when she speaks or especially the Defense speaking about someone none of them ever knew. Jodi has been proven a LIAR why would they believe her now.

I her personal memoirs she talks of being abused in the early 1970's by an unamed male. I'd be very willing to bet she has a fantasy attraction to Jodi Arias, especially after hearing the jailhouse gossip of Jodi's G/F. it reminds me of the prison guard freeing " Jolene " in the movie titled " Jolene

  33. Who cares whether she is a lesbian or not? There are plenty of women who are lesbians and they would not side with Jodi Arias simply because she is a woman. The question is that she is definitely cashing in on this trial. Is Dr. Phil paying for her time? She is biased and was biased when she walked in. This is not uncommon with domestic violence advocates. They do not see outside of what the so-called victims decides to say. She is a fraud and her testimony is 100% biased.

  34. I'm sick listening to this b....shot your mouth Alyce and answer the question, YES OR NO.

  35. The following is my opinion only. I am writing as someone who believes, after listening to the evidence and testimony, that Jodi Arias is guilty of the premeditated murder of Travis Alexander.

And Ms. Arias, even though she may be guilty, as a citizen of the United States, is entitled to due process, which includes allowing her defense team to present defense witnesses.

It seems as though the focus of this trial has gone on a major detour here.

I am not a sister or relative of Alyse La Violette but I am appalled at the character assassination that is taking place on this forum about the defense witness, whom, it might serve us all to remember is NOT the person on trial.

A defense witness in any murder trial is obviously not a popular role to play.

It seems to me that because most have already formed the opinion that Ms. Arias is guilty, everyone on this forum is ready to destroy the character, reputation and career of Ms.La Violette for presenting her opinions.

I do not believe that Ms. La Violette is attempting to portray Ms. Arias as innocent. I think she is trying to mitigate the damaging evidence against Jodia Arias by injecting the context of what she perceives as an abusive relationship. Perhaps she is just trying to save the woman's life.

    1. She is trying to portray JA as the victim, that is exactly why she is so disliked. Does she even realized that he is dead?

    2. I am a therapist and I've testified in court before. The problem with Alyce's testimony is that she is presenting things are facts which are NOT facts; they are her opinions and things she was TOLD by Jodi Arias. I cannot believe she isn't protecting herself better by being clear about these things. It seems like such a rookie mistake to make for someone as experienced as she is.

Alyce LaViolette is hurting herself and her reputation by doing this. It makes me a little sad for her, actually. There is nothing wrong with her having her own clinical opinion. But she isn't presenting it as opinion. She's presenting it as fact. And it's just not.

      Delete
    3. The sad part is that she is not only hurting herself, but every professional who testifies in other cases where the defendant was actually abused. And there is no way Jodi can compair to a real victim of DV. I was physically and verbaly abused up untill the age of 16. Great comments about LaViolette. It's fascinating that you are a therapist and feel Alyce has been presenting her opinions as facts ("the gospel", as I say). Her testimony would have been much more effective if she were willing to admit that there's a chance Arias lied to her. She is so unwilling to waiver on her trust of Arias's tales that it calls her credibility into serious question!

      Delete
  36. @Anonymous - I LOVE your comment. Normally one would tell another to "shut" their mouth, but I think we all (some subconsciously, maybe) kinda wish she'd shot her mouth by now, as you suggested.

My take on this little catty bratty Laviolette is that she's nearing retirement and sees the fame and fortune she'll garner from the book deal she's likely working on related to this case. It should be "notoriety", but sadly, in our culture, she will gain fame and fortune in the long run.

The woman is pathetic, dishonorable, and devoid of integrity. Once she crossed that line into The Land of Jodi Arias, there could be no turning back. I guess it was worth it to her, to get her man-hating spew out there to a massive audience like this. I find her despicable and I detest everything about her. I hope every one of her clients leaves her and finds genuine help from someone with integrity.

  37. @Anonymous w/comment from 4/9 at 1:31am: I can't speak for anyone else, but what put me over the edge was her behavior during cross examination, right out of the starting gate. I wasn't even really bothered during her direct testimony - but her utter disrespect and petulant behavior on cross is completely unprofessional and - since you're defending her and perhaps Arias, you should note this - THIS IS NOT HELPING ARIAS WHATSOEVER. Anyway you slice it, she's offensive and enormously unlikeable at this point. That means she is now doing a very poor job at "trying to save this woman's life".

  38. i had never heard of laviollette before - don't live in the US - but observing her behaviour on the stand i have to say she is manipulative, aggressive, and could see why people would want to smack her in the mouth (no, it is not permitted, but there are people who can not take this sort of attitude and respond violently). laviollette is also arrogant, tries to bolster her non-professional status by calling herself a psychotherapist (in canada one has to be a medical doctor, trained psychiatrist and have additional training to be called a psychotherapist).

i would not trust anything that comes out of this woman's mouth. i would attach very little weight to her judgment, because she has precious little of substance to add here.

  39. Alyce made a (wrong) calcuated risk to find DV the reason Jodi A. killed Travis.

That may be a career ending decision.

I'm doubtful she had only a sliver of information on Jodi.

Had she honestly told the Defense what her Expert Opinion of Jodi was..given the mountains of evidence, it would have cut her off from receiving more $$$$ from the trial.

So many authentically DV women are upset and I support them (I'm not a victim of DV) because they do not want or need to be lumped in with a Killer who's reasons had nothing to do with DV.

I notice the Jodi-fans-bots are out and about. They seem to turn up to defend Jodi with pretty superficial reasons. Sad..truly sad that these people cannot see the Truth of her scheme to premeditate this murder of Travis Alexander. May he rest in peace.

  46. When Laviolette first came on the stand, she appeared down to earth and informed, however...as she constantly states "the bigger picture" and "context" I ask if she truly understands such herself. Other than the pre-hearsed testimony, her arrogance as well as ignorance seems to be the true bigger picture and the context thus far seems to be her attempting to sidetrack from anything that was not pre-hearsed. She obviously chose the wrong Prosecutor. The defense has seen the light they are losing this fight and are constantly searching for reasons for mistrial. I wouldnt be at all surprised if they set Juan Martinez up with the "autograph" scenario. Although it is understandable that people would love him and why prople would send death threats to the defense. Why they would need security mystifies me as they seem to regard death as a circus act. BLAHviolette did herself in today with her sarcasm today regarding the time-out remark.I think she did Jody Arias in at the same time. Yes, Jody deserves a defense. We all would want representation. 48. I believe that Jodi Arias is guilty of premeditated murder. I also believe that Travis used and was mentally cruel to Jodi. I am not making excuses for Jodi but trying to make sense of it It is clear that Jodi had untreated or undiagnosed mental issues, going back a long time, before she ever met Travis. She put up with a lot because she hoped that she would eventually win Travis over. When she finally realised she would not, she flipped and planned his murder. Travis was only beginning to realise who he was playing around with but it was too late for him. Going on holiday with another girl sealed his fate.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments. It's true that some of Travis's text messages etc. to Jodi Arias were unkind. And her parents pointed out to Det. Flores that Jodi may be bipolar and behaved erratically when she was a teenager. I think the defense would have been better off with some sort of insanity plea than self defense, but there must have been a reason they didn't go that route. I have no doubt that Arias went to Mesa with murder in mind. Nobody goes to those lengths to travel under the radar and staging a robbery for a gun unless they have something in mind! 51. It is amazing to me that so many people are slamming Alyce LaViolette given the information that she was allowed to have access to. Like it or not, Travis and Jodi had one really f*%@ked up relationship. Jodi is definately a psycho-path and is most likely guilty of premeditated murder. This being stated, she is still entitled to a defense. Most reasonable people in this world also see the death penalty as outrageously expensive, barbaric, inhumane and not much of a deterrent to violent crime. It makes perfect sense to me that a domestic violence expert would desire to save a life. Even the life of a horrible, nasty psycho-path like Jodi Arias. You also have to admit that Travis Alexander in his text messages and phone conversations to Jodi (he did state that he would like to tie her to a tree and rape her), gave Ms LaViolette something to work with. And, if you are outraged by what this trial is costing the state of Arizona, that will be nothing in comparison to the costs it will incur should Jodi be sentenced to death. Appeal after appeal, -One knows that this circus they call a trial has enough bizarre things going on that an appellate court will certainly find grounds for appeal. Better they lock her away with no chance parole - ever! It won't satisfy those individuals that desire vengence for Travis but perhaps vengence is an overrated action that just causes further heartache and despair for those that have already suffered due to this heartbreaking situation.

    2. so you want to bring up the "tie to a tree and rape you text" ok, how do you know that Jodi didn't tell Travis during a previous sexual incounter that she wanted him to "rape her" as a seduction ploy. as shocking as that maybe to some. it is a fact that some people engage in that kind of rollplay in their sex life. so unless he molested her or had sex with her against her will or consent. why are you holding that comment against him when you hear Jodi giggling and saying " I LIKE IT"

    4. Anonymous (4/11/13 at 5:10AM), People are not only upset about LaViolette's portrayal of Travis Alexander but the manner in which she reached it. It seems unfair that she never reached out to the people who knew Travis to get a better understanding of who he was. But I think the single most damaging thing LaViolette has done to her credibility is her absolute unwillingness to admit that she could be wrong if Arias lied to her about the physical violence. Had she admitted that, her testimony would have been more effective in my opinion. Thanks for your comments

I am, however, in favor of the family and close loved ones being given a free pass to kill the person themselves if they so choose, after they've been found guilty and sentenced to death. (I haven't figured out the logistics of how that would all work in the real world, but that's my sincere position.)

  53. I thought it was very telling that on the first day Martinez had a chance to question LaViolette, even within the first minutes, she comes at him with, " Are you angry with me Mr. Martinez?" Almost as if she expects men to be abusive and angry and has that mindset. Of course, it could be that was a calculated move to put the prosecution on the defensive. I'm sure the woman has knowledge in her field, but the very nature of that occupation calls for people to be of a trusting and compassionate/ sympathetic nature--and that type of personality can often be manipulated and deceived by those who don't share the same positive qualities.

Great comments and observations about Alyce LaViolette and her style with Juan Martinez. You are right, it was right out of the gate that she was combative, yet trying to make Juan Martinez sound as if he was trying to put words in her mouth. He simply wanted her to answer the questions as asked, but ALV couldn't keep her responses to yes or no and they turned into mini-speeches. Even after being admonished by the Judge, this continued. I had expected more out of this witness, given her background. Thanks for sharing your views!

  56. So ok, Travis wasn't a "good" morman. He liked sex and dated multiple women at the same time. Sounds like every other guy walking around. Sounds pretty normal to me. The fact of the matter is most men and some women will go for sex when sex is offered. whether they "like" or even find the other person attractive. To some men sex is a physical act void of "love" feelings. A booty call. Jodi was willing to continue having sex with Travis dispite the fact that he had an intrest in other women. Travis wasn't the one who drove hundredes of miles to have sex with Jodi. So can someone please explane why the like of consensual agressive sex, anal sex, phone sex. outdoor sex, rollplay sex, whitch is all quite "normal" to most of us, makes Travis a horrible sexual deviant. and PLEASE explain what that has anything to do with Jodi planning and brutally murdering Travis and discarding him at the bottom of a shower like a dirty towel. JUSTICE FOR TRAVIS!!!

No. Was I hard on them? Yes. Did I speak harshly to them at times? Yep. Did they grow up to be well behaved adults and citizens? Am I proud of them? Absolutely!!! 85. The most telling evidence of LaViolette's bias and grossly unprofessional demeanor is that she has consistently testified about Travis Alexander as if what she says are FACTS. There is no factual evidence at all that Travis EVER abused anyone, especially Arias. LaViolette has never even qualified the fact that her testimony is ONLY based on Arias journals/interview - and based on all prior testimony, we know that Arias is lying and lied to LaViolette, and LaViolette knows it. I believe LaViolette is a very disturbed person. She shows her true colors with the way she speaks to Mr. Martinez. If she had fact-based, irrefutable evidence that Travis was an abuser - she would be proud and happy to prove as much - especially under cross examination, with direct and easy answers. LaViolette is a disgrace to all who are victims of DV, and she is a liar - a liar for money.
The very worst thing she has done in front of all us is turn her back on the real domestic violence survivors - Travis Alexander's family. To do what she is doing in front of them - erases any and all she has done in her entire career on behalf of DV.
I wonder how many other people she has harmed during her decades-long career. I wonder how many falsely accused men are in prison because of her "expert testimony?" Think about it.

In another anonymous comment today (at 3:36PM), a reader told a story about her brother who was falsely accused by his wife of domestic abuse/battery. Guess who appeared in court along side of the lying wife? None other than Alyce LaViolette! This reader's brother's life was effected so badly because of the false allegations, he lost a job he'd had for 17 years, lost his house. Does ALV even care of the repercussions of her reports and testimony? She refuses to admit her theories MAY BE flawed, and someone who can't even admit there is a chance they could be wrong has no business testifying in a court of law. It's not DNA she's discussing, where absolute proof exists. Her views are subjective, but she presents them as if they are the gospel according to Alyce. Thanks for posting your comments!

  86. Many years ago, my brother was in the middle of a divorce, and his wife at the time had been out of his house for 6 months. She was on drugs and having a very hard time. He came home from work one day (17 years on the same job), and the police were there and arrested him for beating his wife. He had not even seen her in 6 months! Guess who was in court for her? LaViolette! He lost his house and his job while he was incarcerated. It took almost 2 years to finally get the right attorney's and investigators to prove that his wife had been beaten up in a drug-street-fight and get him out of prison. I'm just sayin - he had never laid a hand on her - no police reports - no proof - he was blindsided and so unprepared for the accusation, nobody knew how to fight this at the time. LaViolette is a danger to innocent vicitms accused of domestic violence!!!!!!!She never spoke to anyone in our family, or any of their friends. Just took the word of drug addict -

Not only to falsely accused - but it causes LaViolette to have an entire career based on a lot of untruths. If she doesn't do adequate "research" - how can she, or anyone, rely on any part of her entire history as a domestic violence expert? I personally can not classify her as any kind of "expert." 92. This is the first time I have ever taken the time to write to someone I saw on any program, but I felt compelled. First off, I do not know either side in this case… I only have been watching trial on TV. I can’t even watch you anymore. It’s so disgusting! I am so surprised that an “expert” witness can be so blatantly biased and one sided as you. Shame on you Ms LaViolette !! You have lost any credibility you may have had at the beginning. I'm sure that the women who are truly abused are even more disgusted than I am. Are you that desperate for money that you would defile Travis Alexander who was brutally slaughtered by Jody, in front of his family??? How do you equate 27 stab wounds, mostly to his back, his throat slit from ear to ear, and a gunshot wound to his head as self-defense??? Are you kidding me? If she was defending herself why didn’t she have injuries??? Self defense??? Travis is the one with defense wounds. He’s the only one with 28 knife wounds and gunshot! Where are her defense wounds? I am unable to wrap my brain around how anybody can say Jodi was defending her life. My God, have you not heard all of the people who knew Travis as well as his friends talk about how Jodi slit his tires… more than once or twice. Jodi also slit the tires of a girl he was dating…. and she cornered a friend, that happened to be a girl, in the bathroom to tell her Travis was hers. What about the roommate who spoke to Jodi shortly after his body was found. The roommate said after he talked to Jodi, he was convinced she had nothing to do with it. This was based on Jodi’s reaction when she found out Travis was dead. Then, when this roommate found out that Jodi indeed did kill him, he was commented on how believable she was. Jodi Arias is a pathological liar, a narcissistic, and you, as an educated woman can’t see this?? For God sake’s, she was peeping into Travis’ window while he’s with another girl, yet you can stand before a court of law and that was NOT stalking. You stated you arrived at all your conclusions after reading text messages, or instant messages and Travis’ Journals from Dec 07- May of 08. That’s 5 months! So in 5 months, you are convinced that Travis Alexander is the perpetrator and on top of that, a pedophile. The only thing Travis was guilty of was being a flirt and lying about his virginity!! Every single thing that comes out of Jodi Arias’ mouth is a lie. Don’t you see how your perception is based on LIES! You also contradict yourself repeatedly. You tell the court your “only” an expert in Domestic Violence, but yet you make accusations regarding Travis. Again only based on Jodi’s lies. I hope the money was worth it because in case your not watching television, everyone thinks you are a joke. I hope it’s the last dollar you ever make. Shame on you! You put Travis Alexander’s family through hell and every day you are on the stand defaming Travis, you are killing them more. I hope it was worth it. Just know it could not be more obvious that you fell into Jodi’s web. This whole thing can be summed up… Jodi wanted Travis. Travis did not want Jodi. Jodi is a socio/pschyopath and she slaughtered him. Rest assured she remembers it too.
